A. BoatUS Offers Free Winterizing Guide courtesy of Boat US

Q. How do I read my hull or serial number;
A. MPC - is the company builder code logged with the Coast Guard
36 - would indicate the model designation
292 - would indicate the number of boats with model designation, or a prefix of "2" with 92 boats produced. This one I would have to research a little more though.
A - is the indication of a January build month
888 - indicates the 1988 model year, built in the physical year of 1988.

Q. I own a 2002 Mainship Pilot 30. Do you have recommendations on what type/brand of bottom paint I should use? Any bottom preparation tips?
A. The bottom paint we use is a Petit product. If you go to Boater's World or West Marine stores, they should have a copy of the application systems related to the product. Switching to a different brand or color is a choice that you could make once you see the product lines carried at these stores.
In preparation of the bottom, pay close attention to the application instructions. Of major importance is the use of proper safety items. Second is removal of any loose paint currently on the vessel. Third would be the proper "cleaning" of the surfaces prior to applying new paint. All of this is outlined in application instructions.

Q. Can you tell me the model number of the AFI wipers are installed on the 2003 Pilot 30-II sedan?
A. The model AFI we use on the 30II Pilot Sedan is 2000 with 2 1/2" long stem, with a sweep of 110.
Q. We just ( 3/25/03 )purchased a 1994 MS 31 S/B - it has the original canvas on it. It rained yesterday and the water leaked through the canvas the whole bridge area was soaked. Could you tell us what we could use on the canvas to make it waterproof.
A. You may want to purchase canvas sealer at either a camping store or other type of store. Also, West Marine stores should have some type of water proofing for older canvas.
Seam seal is probably a needed item also. A good zipper lubricant is good to have as part of your maintenance kit too. We hope you are able to solve your issue quickly.

Q. I own a 35ft mainship mediterranean 1989. I get a gasoline odor in the cabin during warm weather. I see no evidence offuel leaks on the engines or the fuel tank. The odor disappers as soon as I turn the blower on and does not come back until the following day.
A. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you run your blower more than 3 minutes prior to starting your boat, and also while idle operation when underway. Older boats may begin to experience permeation from the fuel tanks or welds that begin to have a small pinhole open. This may be where your fuel smell comes from.
Also, warm weather may create expansion of fittings. That condition may also mean a leak.
WE WOULD ALSO STRONGLY ADVISE that you have a certified marine technician check for leaks in your system before again using the boat. Thank you for letting us try to assist. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Q. I have a 1979 Mainship Model I. My fuel gauge reads 3/4 on each tanks when toggled between the two tanks. What would cause the gauge to read incorrectly like this?
A. The tanks may have "equalized" down to a 3/4 level, unless both are verified as full. If verified as full in both tanks, then you may have either a fuel sender gone bad or the float switch system is failing.
